Saint Apollinare bishop
Sant'Apollinare, born in Antioch and died in Ravenna in the first century, was the first bishop and patron of Ravenna.
It is mentioned for the first time in the document of the Geronimian Martyrology, dating back to the beginning of the fifth century, in which a note defines the saint as a confessor priest.
In the port of Ravenna, in the same spot where Sant’Apollinare was martyred, the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe was erected in the 6th century, where his remains were placed.
The relics of the saint were, in the ninth century, moved to the city center, to a pre-existing church which from that moment was called Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, subsequently, in 1748, they were brought back to the original basilica, which in the meantime had been reconsecrated.
The popularity of Sant'Apollinare grew over time, since he was considered the national saint of the Byzantine domination in the West.
