Saint Aurelian of Arles

Elected bishop of Arles in 546, Aureliano was appointed by Pope Vigilius as vicar of the diocese in Gaul, where he founded the monastery of San Pietro, to which he gave a rule that drew inspiration from that of San Cesario.

He also took part in the Council of Orleans in 549, where the condemnation of Eutiche and Nestorius was confirmed.

In response to his letter, sent to Pope Vigilius, in which he criticized the papal position regarding the "three chapters", on April 29, 550 he was replied that the pontiff had no intention of confirming any proposition against the fundamental principles established by the councils of Nicea, Chalcedon and Ephesus.

In addition, Aureliano was asked to intercede with Chilideberto with the aim of obtaining full respect for the Roman Church from the Aryan Totila and the Goths.

On June 16, 551, Aureliano died in Lyon and was buried at the Basilica of the Holy Apostles.

Floro and Adone cite the name of Aureliano in the Roman Martyrologist, in which the feast is fixed on June 16th.
