Located in the Valle del Noce, in an area rich in springs and ponds, Lagonegro includes Mount Sirino in its territory and falls within the area of ​​the Lucano Val d'Agri Lagonegrese Apennine National Park.

The historic center of Lagonegro, whose origins probably date back to Roman times, still retains the appearance of a medieval village.


Located on a small promontory, it can be reached via a staircase with many steps, passing the Iron Gate.

Inside there is the church of San Nicola, dating back to the tenth century and including elaborate decorations inside, some claim that the Mona Lisa painted by Leonardo da Vinci is buried.

At the top of the promontory you can still see the remains of the Castle while the Piazza Grande, which represents the city center of the modern area, has at its center a nineteenth-century fountain and eighteenth-century buildings to surround it.


What see

Inside the Church of Sant'Anna from 1665, there is a 15th century wooden sculpture and an altarpiece by Francesco Geatano.

The church of the Rosary, which has a beautiful seventeenth-century portal, has an interior with a single nave with a frescoed ceiling and including some valuable paintings, including the canvas of San Giuseppe and the Madonna and Child of the Neapolitan school.

Just outside the town is the monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli, inside which there is a canvas depicting San Francesco and San Domenico, as well as a seventeenth-century altarpiece.


On the slopes of Mount Sirino there is the Chapel of the Madonna della Neve, to which the feast of the Madonna delle Nevi del Sirino is dedicated, which takes place three times a year.

At 3 kilometers from the center of Lagonegro is located the lake of Laudemio, which is of glacial origin, its basin is very popular in winter, thanks to the presence of ski slopes.
