Lanzarote (Atlantic Ocean): useful information on the island

Useful information on Lanzarote, the northernmost and easternmost of the seven islands belonging to the Canary archipelago, characteristics of the climate and how to get there.


Tourist information

The island is located in the Atlantic Ocean, about 125 km from the border between Morocco and Western Sahara, 1,020 km from the coast of the Iberian Peninsula.

The highest point of Lanzarote is Penas del Chache with 670 m of altitude.


In the Timanfaya National Park are the Mountains of Fire, Fire Mountains, where in 1730 one of the most violent eruptions in the world occurred that caused the devastation of the western part of Lanzarote, destroying entire cities and villages.

Climate

Lanzarote enjoys mild climate all year round with average temperatures of around 22 ° C.

It rains very little, on average no more than 15 days in a year, concentrated in the period between December and January.


The north of the island tends to be affected by more intense winds and clear skies.

Occasionally there may be a rise in temperatures up to 40 ° C coinciding with the sirocco wind, which carries hot and dry air together with the sand from the Sahara desert.

This phenomenon never exceeds the duration of a week.


Lanzarote requires light clothes accompanied by k-ways or similar to protect themselves from the wind depending on the season.

How to get

The best way to get to Lanzarote is by plane, the island has an international airport located in the municipalities of San Bartolomé y Tías not far from Arrecife, which is the capital of the island.
