The Lazio region, part of central Italy, is washed by the Tyrrhenian Sea and borders on Tuscany, Umbria, Marche, Abruzzo, Molise and Campania.

The provinces are Rome, Frosinone, Latina, Rieti, Rome and Viterbo. The Lazio region is mainly occupied by hills, the remainder by mountains and plains.


The mountains belong to the Apennines and wind along the innermost part of the region, along the border with Abruzzo, among the highest peaks stands Monte Terminillo (2216 m s.l.m.).

In the central part of the territory, parallel to the coast, there are the hills, from which the reliefs that form the anti-Apennine system emerge, represented by the Volsini, Cimini and Sabatini mountains, of volcanic origin, and further south by the Alban Hills always volcanic origin, the Lepini, Ausoni and Aurunci mountains.

The plains extend along the coast and the main waterways, starting from the Lazio Maremma plain to the north, the flat area around Rome of the Agro Romano, and further south of the Agro Pontino.

Rome, in fact, can count on an immense artistic, archaeological, cultural and religious heritage, has many assets protected by Unesco, inside it houses the Vatican City State, the seat of the Holy See.

In addition to the capital, the region offers sites of great interest, such as Tarquinia, Ostia Antica, Cassino, Rieti, Viterbo, numerous castles, Roman villas, the Etruscan necropolis of Cerveteri, the Abbey of Fossanova.
