Tourist information

Located in the province of Syracuse in the San Marco valley and surrounded by citrus crops, Lentini was founded in 729 BC, reaching its maximum splendor during the period of Greek domination.

Subsequently it fell under the dominion of the Syracusans and in the third century BC. it was occupied by the Romans, before being conquered by the Saracens in the ninth century.


The new city, built on the rubble of the earthquake that occurred in 1693, has a typically eighteenth-century appearance.

In the Mother Church there is a Christian tomb from the third century AD. and an icon from the Byzantine era.

In the archaeological museum, prehistoric and archaic finds are collected, coming from the ancient city and the surrounding areas.


What see

The archaeological park is located along the valley south of the current city.

The walls, dating back to the seventh and sixth centuries BC, were rebuilt several times until the third century BC.

Of great interest is the necropolis, consisting of three distinct stratifications, datable from the fourth century BC. and having tombs characterized by different shapes.

On the Metapiccola hill you can see the remains of a prehistoric village, as well as the base of a Greek temple.

Nearby there are the remains of a fortified building, dating back to the Swabian period and known as the Castellaccio, and the Grotta del Crocifisso, decorated with remarkable frescoes.
