Located on the Sila plateau a short distance from San Giovanni in Fiore, Lorica is a tourist resort in Calabria in the province of Cosenza, overlooking Lake Arvo, an artificial basin created for the production of electricity, which has the appearance of the typical lake high mountain, being surrounded by larch pine woods.

The Lorica area began to be inhabited by shepherds from the early 1900s, with the aim of practicing high altitude pasture.

Developed initially along the highway 108 bis which leads from San Giovanni in Fiore to the crossroads of "Bocca di Piazza", from which it is possible to reach the towns of the Sila area of ​​Cosenza, subsequently a part of the town developed around Lake Arvo.

The lake, located between Botte Donato and Montenero, which are the two largest peaks of the Sila plateau, contributes to making the place more welcoming.


What see

It is possible to go on motor boat excursions and rent pedal boats in the summer, in addition, Lake Arvo has hosted various rowing and windsurfing competitions.

As a summer holiday destination, Lorica offers the possibility of hiking, cycling and horse riding.

During the winter season, ski lovers can take advantage of the ski lifts located in the valley of hell.


It is also possible to fish and practice rowing.

In the surroundings, an ancient hermitage built by the friars in 1200 deserves to be visited, in addition, in the area there are a series of fortified towers equipped with a drawbridge and slits, once the home of the land guards, who used them to protect themselves from the criminals.
