Macomer (Sardinia): what to see

post-title

What to see in Macomer, itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including the Nuraghe Santa Barbara, the Church of San Pantaleo and the Museo del Marghine.

Tourist information

Located in the province of Nuoro, between the Marghine mountains and along the road that connects the north and south of Sardinia, Macromer has been inhabited since the Nuragic era, was later conquered by the Romans and was the capital of the Marghine, before moving on to the Aragonese.

The numerous nuragic sites in the area, considered among the most interesting in Sardinia, contribute to proving this claim.

Among the main places of interest are the Nuraghe Santa Barbara, formed by a central tower with a quadrangular base of generous dimensions and red coloring, and the Nuraghe Ruggiu, where you can see tombs dating back to the Copper Age.

In the district of Santa Croce there are buildings with Gothic-Aragonese portals and windows.

What see

The Church of San Pantaleo, dating back to the sixteenth century and restored the following century, shows an eighteenth-century wooden crucifix inside.

In the Museo del Marghine there are interesting historical and archaeological testimonies concerning the whole area.

Nearby, about ten kilometers away, is Silanus, a small town where it is advisable to see the thirteenth-century Church of San Lorenzo, externally decorated with hanging arches, while inside you can see traces of frescoes from the fourteenth century.

Nearby are the remains of a prehistoric settlement, including the Nuraghe Santa Sabina, a sacred well and a tomb of giants.

Not far away is the Romanesque church of Santa Sabina, dating back to the year 1000, of considerable interest for the particular structure with three rooms each ending with an apse.
