Mahdia tour guide

Mahdia is a city in Tunisia located on a small peninsula on the Mediterranean Sea, in the extreme south of the Gulf of Hammamet.

The resort is a very popular seaside resort, with beautiful beaches of fine white sand and a clear sea.

In the tourist area, called Nouvelle zone touristique and built in the Hibun district, there are numerous hotels that have made Mahdia, an important fishing port since the past, a place with a wide tourist offer.

What to visit in Mahdia

The city, founded in 916 by the Fatimids, has an illustrious history as it was their impregnable capital for a period of time.

The construction of the Great Mosque dates back to that period, which we can still admire today, even if the original was destroyed by Spanish troops in 1554 and the current one is a faithful reconstruction dating back to 1965.

On one side of the beautiful tree-lined square of Place du Caire stands the Mustapha Hamza Mosque built in 1772.

Of the imposing fortification of the Fatimids, the entrance gate called Skifa el-Kahla is the only original structure that remains of the ancient city, as well as some remains of the palace of Caliph al-Qa'im bi-amr Allah.

The fascinating 16th-century fortress Borj el-Kebir overlooks the peninsula and near it are the remains of the old port, the fishermen's cemetery and a lighthouse.

Do not miss a visit to the medina, characterized by lively and assorted indoor souks, to learn about the uses and customs of the locals.
