post-title

What to see in Maratea, itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including the Mother Church, the Basilica of San Biagio, the ruins of Maratea Vecchia and the Cave of Wonders in Marina.

Tourist information

Located at the foot of Mount San Biagio, Maratea was an ancient Lombard settlement.

In the eyes of the visitor it presents itself with the typical medieval aspect, characterized by narrow streets where buildings adorned with loggias and churches overlook, including that of San Vito, dating back to the eleventh century and featuring a single nave interior with a presbytery characterized by a painted cross vault.

Very interesting is the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, better known as the Mother Church and dating back to the thirteenth century, with a facade comprising two adoring marble angels placed in decoration and attributed to Tommaso Malvito, sculpted around the middle of the fifteenth century.

What see

Inside this building of worship it is possible to admire a magnificent false ceiling, in addition to the Baroque stuccos and the pictorial works placed to decorate the walls.

Along the road that leads to the summit of Monte San Biagio, you will find the Basilica of San Biagio and the ruins of Maratea Vecchia.

Maratea is considered, together with the neighboring towns along the coast, one of the major tourist centers in the region, renowned for having varied and very suggestive landscapes, as well as for the quality of the sea and its beaches.

Numerous caves open along the coast, including the splendid cave of wonders, located in Marina di Maratea.
