post-title

The Saint of the day March 1 is Saint Albino of Angers, which name day is celebrated and other saints are celebrated on this date.

Saint Albino of Angers

Born in Vannes in France in about 470, Albino di Angers belonged to a noble family.

He became a monk, becoming abbot in Tincillac in 504, located near Guérande, a town in the Loire region.

He remained in that convent for twenty-five years and his fame, due to the profound virtues he possessed, found wide diffusion.

In 529 he was elected bishop in the city of Angers, contrary to what his wishes were, in fact he would have preferred not to accept but it was because of the insistence of the people that he could not withdraw.

At that time, incestuous marriages between noble families were often made in order to protect large estates.

Albino opposed this malpractice firmly, trying to put an end to this bad habit.

For this reason he took part actively in several Councils in Orleans, to contribute to a profound renewal of the Church.

Due to his determined character, he was the recipient of several threats, furthermore his unwavering convictions sparked heated contrasts with other Bishops but, despite this, he never stopped spreading his moralizing ideas.

His death occurred on March 1, 550, in the city of Angers, where he was buried for some time in the Church of San Pierre, until, six years later, his remains were moved to a church dedicated to him.

Near the Church of Sant’Albino, an abbey was erected shortly after, where, in 1126, the remains of the saint were definitively placed.

In the following years, thanks to the narratives and writings of Bishop Gregory of Tours, it was possible to know different facts and aspects of the life of Saint Albino, one of the most revered saints in medieval times.

In fact, devotion to Saint Albino of Angers was widespread not only in France, but also in other countries, including Poland and England, and then spread to the rest of Europe.

According to what tradition has handed down, it is said that Sant’Albino was constantly a good and charitable person, ready to give his help to anyone who was in a difficult situation.

It seems that he frequently used part of the money belonging to the Diocese to redeem the hostages, in fact it was not uncommon for some brigand to kidnap people to profit from it.

Further accounts make it clear that one day Saint Albino quarreled with King Childeberto who had jailed a woman for his release, but in vain.
