Saint Matilde of Germany

Born in Enger in about 895 and died in Quedlinburg on March 14, 968, Matilda of Ringelheim was the wife of Henry I the Birdess, first Duchess of Saxony and later Queen of Germany.

Mother of Emperor Otto the Great, once her husband died, she became a nun in the abbey of Quedlinburg, which she had founded.

Tireless in good works and very charitable, Matilde was like an angel towards her subjects until she had her husband at her side who, loving her, instilled courage in her.

But once his spouse Enrico died, the children fought over the succession and his life began to be a purgatory.

Accused of squandering the finances of the Kingdom, she was deprived of all her possessions and humiliated to such an extent that she became poorer than those she had benefited from.

Despite this he refrained from protesting against this injustice to claim his rights.

It was thanks to her intense prayers that the children repented, giving her back her rights.

In this way Matilde was able to resume her charity work, carried out until the day of her death, which took place in 968 at the Quedlinburg monastery.
