Saint Serapion of Thmuis
Born around the year 300 in an unspecified place and died in Thmuis in about 370, Serapion of Thmuis, called the Scholastic, exercised the ministry of bishop in the city of Thmuis, the current Tell el Timai in Egypt, and was a prestigious writer of texts relating to religious subjects in Greek.
Retiring young in the desert, he became a disciple of Antonio abbot who, after his death, dedicated one of his two sheepskin cloaks to him.
Before becoming bishop in 339, he took over the leadership of a community of monks.
It is believed that he participated in 343 in the Council of Sardica, today's Sofia, also he was part of the committee sent by the patriarch Athanasius of Alexandria to the emperor Constantius II with the aim of countering and demolishing the accusations of the Arians but unfortunately without success.
In 359 Constantius II had the bishop Serapion replaced by the Aryan Ptolemy in the leadership of the diocese of Thmuis.
Three fragments of letters addressed to him by Apollinare di Laodicea would confirm that he was still alive in 370.
Five letters from Athanasius of Alexandria to Serapion of Thmuis pass on further news, including that of Arius' death in 358, as well as excellent dogmatic expositions concerning the question of the divinity of the Holy Spirit.
