San Turibio de Mogrovejo
Born in Mayorga on November 16, 1538 and died in Sana on March 23, 1606, Turibio de Mogrovejo was a Spanish archbishop, as well as a law teacher in Salamanca, an inquisitor in Granada and archbishop of Lima.
He studied canon law in Valladolid and at the University of Salamanca, where he stayed even after graduating to devote himself to teaching.
While still a layman, in February 1571 Philip II placed him in charge of the Inquisition court of Granada.
In May 1579 the sovereign appointed him archbishop of Lima with subsequent ecclesiastical confirmation by Pope Gregory XIII.
His episcopal ministry took place in a very large diocese, which Turibio managed to visit entirely three times, learning the local language and becoming promoter of the Gospel and instructor of the indigenous peoples he met during his pilgrimage.
He dealt with the publication of the catechism in Spanish with the utmost commitment and was the founder of the first seminar in Latin America in Lima in 1591.
In 1605, during a pastoral visit to Pacasmayo, he contracted the fever that led him to death the following year, at his residence in Sana, located near Lima, on the day he fell on Holy Thursday.
On 2 July 1679 he was declared blessed by Pope Innocent XI, while on 10 December 1726 he was canonized by Pope Benedict XIII.
