Saints Baronto and Desiderio
San Baronto was a French monk of the Benedictine order who, according to legend, on the way back from his pilgrimage to Rome, after landing in Pisa, headed inland to the woods on Monte Albano, near Pistoia, where he remained to lead a hermit life together with five other companions, including Desiderio.
The reputation of holiness of the hermits attracted many faithful and their memory remained alive in the population even after their death at the end of the eighth century.
In 1018 the bishop of Pistoia consecrated a church with a crypt on the site of the hermitage where the remains of San Baronto and San Desiderio were recomposed.
The presence of this Abbey, dedicated to San Baronto, was very important for the economic and social development of the small peasant community that settled around it.
In addition, according to the Benedictine rule, a "hospitable" was also built nearby, that is, a welcoming place intended to welcome pilgrims.
Traces of the monastery have been lost, but since 1732 the church has become the parish church of the town, which has taken the name of San Baronto.
The current building was rebuilt, maintaining the original Romanesque style, after a bombing of the Second World War caused its destruction.
