San Beniamino

Deacon of Ergol in Persia, San Beniamino is placed in a group of Christians martyred and killed during the long period of persecution that affected that nation.

There are various stories that outline the development of what was one of the worst persecutions in Christian history, with often conflicting news.

The most relevant episode tells that, around the year 420, some Christians, under the guidance of the priest Hasu, set a piraeus, or a temple dedicated to the cult of fire, on fire in Ergol.

Following this destruction, Bishop Abdas was arrested together with his brother, in addition to the priests Hasu and Isaac with the secretary Ephrem and the laity Daduq and Durtan.

The civil authorities ordered Bishop Abdas to immediately rebuild the temple but, following his refusal, they were all sentenced to death.

To these, in the liturgical calendar, other martyrs involved in that massacre are also associated, including Ormisda, Sahin and Beniamino, deacon of Ergol.
