Saint Ignatius of Laconi

Vincenzo Peis, who later became Fra Ignazio da Laconi, was born in Laconi on 17 December 1701 and died in Cagliari on 11 May 1781.

Very devoted and dedicated to penance, Ignatius entered the Franciscan order, holding the positions of dispenser and humble beggar, first in the convent of Iglesias and, subsequently, also in other convents.

After fifteen years, he was called back to Cagliari at the Buoncammino convent, where he worked in the wool mill and as a beggar for the city streets, carrying on his apostolate between the poor and sinners for about forty years, making himself useful and causing conversions to the Christian faith.

People used to call him "Holy Father", even a Protestant pastor who was chaplain to the German infantry regiment, even wanted to call him "a living saint".

Two years before he died he lost his sight and for this reason he was released from begging but he did not refrain from continuing to firmly respect the Rule as his Franciscan confreres
