The Saint of the 16 May is Saint Ubaldo of Gubbio, which name day is celebrated and other saints are celebrated on this date.
Sant’Ubaldo di Gubbio
Born in Gubbio in about 1084 and died in the same city on 16 May 1160, Ubaldo Baldassini was bishop of Gubbio during the XII century, revered today as a saint by the Catholic Church.
Belonging to a noble family of Germanic origins, Ubaldo was prematurely orphaned of both parents and was raised by his namesake uncle who cared to provide him with a good religious and school education.
A few years after his priestly ordination, which took place in 1140, Ubaldo was elected prior of his rectory, whose care he took to reform the discipline and customs.
Having become famous for his excellent qualities even beyond the city limits, he was elected Bishop of Perugia in 1126.
Ubaldo however, embarrassed for this honor, went immediately to Rome to ask Pope Honorius II to be relieved of his position and the pontiff accepted, without trying to induce him to rethink his request.
Bishop Ubaldo led the diocese of Gubbio for thirty-one years, during which he overcame all the adversities and obstacles he found on his path, succeeding in the intent that he had proposed, namely to convince enemies and adversaries through his inner gentleness.
