St. Athanasius
Born in Alexandria in Egypt in 295, he was assistant to Bishop Alexander at the Council of Nicaea, becoming his successor in the episcopate.
During the period in which St. Athanasius lived, a great crisis of orthodoxy was taking place, that is, of what was defined as authentic Doctrine, the survival of the Catholic Truth was, for this reason, severely tested.
He was a staunch supporter of the divinity of Christ, for this he fought tenaciously against the Aryans who instead denied it.
For his convictions he had to undergo numerous persecutions and was exiled more than once.
He wrote excellent works, aimed at representing and defending true faith, including the one where he narrated the life of Saint Anthony the Abbot, spreading the monastic ideal with them in the western world.
He died on May 2, 373 in Alexandria, Egypt, where he was buried.
Subsequently his body was brought to Venice during the medieval period, while in May 1973 Shenouda III, Coptic Patriarch of Alexandria, obtained permission from Pope Paul VI to move the body to the Coptic Cathedral of San Marco in Alexandria.
