San Bernardino of Siena

Born in Massa Marittima in 1380, Bernardino degli Albizzeschi, after completing his humanistic studies in Siena, devoted himself with great passion to the study of Sacred Scripture.

At 22 he entered the convent of the Order of Friars Minor and, when he was made a priest, he was charged with exercising the ministry of preaching.

Starting from Tuscany, over time he traveled throughout Italy, announcing the word of God everywhere with great response.

His simple way of speaking was at the same time very incisive and therefore capable of attracting large crowds, awakening, in fact, the religious practice that had weakened and making peace between the factions.

He divulged his devotion to the Most Holy Name of Jesus with great energy and, to make his speeches more effective, he had the monogram "JHS", that is to say the name of Jesus, carved or painted on boards and panels, surrounded by rays similar to those of the sun. .

On 20 May 1444 Bernardino died in L'Aquila, leaving many written works, including the "Sermones" in Latin and the "Preaches" in the vernacular.
