The Saint of the day May 27 is Saint Augustine of Canterbury, which name day is celebrated and other saints are celebrated on this date.
St. Augustine of Canterbury
Born in Rome on 13 November 534 and died in Canterbury on 26 May 604, Augustine was a Benedictine abbot in his hometown and first archbishop of Canterbury, he is also known as the Apostle of England, as he received in 597 from Pope Gregory I, the assignment to go to that state by King Ethelbert of Kent.
On this journey for the purpose of evangelization, against the rampant idolatry that raged in the country, he was accompanied by the one who will become San Lorenzo and the second archbishop of Canterbury after him.
The English king Etelberto, who had agreed to marry Berta, a woman of Frankish origin and of Catholic faith, received him very warmly and converted, putting Augustine in a position to preach freely.
Suffice it to say that in the Christmas following his coming to England, more than ten thousand Saxons were baptized by Augustine.
The Pope then decided to send other missionaries to support the gospel work undertaken, appointing Augustine Archbishop of Canterbury and primate of England.
The resentment of the Bretons against the Saxon invaders was too strong, which is why Archbishop Agostino was unable to bring together the Breton and Saxon Church, but on the other hand managed to convert the Kingdom of Kent to Catholicism almost entirely.
