May 4: saint of the day, name day

post-title

The Saint of the day 4 May is San Ciriaco of Jerusalem, which name day is celebrated and other saints who are celebrated on this date.

Saint Cyriacus of Jerusalem

Born in Jerusalem on an unspecified date, he died in the same city on May 1, 363.

Tradition has it that the original name was Judas, replaced with Cyriacus after his conversion to the Christian faith.

After being appointed bishop of Jerusalem, he had to suffer martyrdom together with his mother Anna, who was tortured and burned alive when Julian the Apostate was in power.

Another tradition, however, says that, immediately after the conversion, Ciriaco would have reached Italy, landing in Ancona, a city where his veneration dates back to the early Middle Ages.

After many years spent exercising his ministry as bishop, during a pilgrimage to the holy land, he would have been subjected to martyrdom around the year 135.

On the contrary, a third tradition narrates that Ciriaco never arrived in Italy and that his relics were moved to Ancona only in the fifth century, at the behest of Galla Placidia.

Due to the strong link between San Ciriaco and the Cross, the date of his feast was set for May 4, corresponding to the day following the feast of the Finding of the Holy Cross.
