Located in the valleys of the Po delta, south of the branch called Po di Goro and along the Romea road, Mesala is best known for its Castle, built between 1578 and 1583 at the behest of Duke Alfonso II d'Este.

The castle, which is located near the Bosco della Mesola, is a square-shaped building with crenellated towers arranged at the four corners, once included among the 19 Este residences.


Built between 1578 and 1583 by Giovan Battista Aleotti on a project by Marcantonio Pasi, called Il Montagnana, at the behest of Alfonso II d'Este, it was used
by the Este family as a home during the hunting trips that they used to carry out in the adjacent Mesola wood.

The delight, as the Estensi residences were called, remained the property of the Este family until 1771, after which there were several changes of ownership until 1952, the year in which it passed under the control of the Ente Delta Padano, before being acquired as property. from the Province of Ferrara.

What see

Nothing remains of the original walls, while the outbuildings are in excellent condition, including stables, warehouses and cellars, where today there are restaurants and shops.


The castle, which contains a library and an environmental education center, houses the Mesola forest and deer museum on the second floor.

On the main floor there is a permanent exhibition that traces the various stages of the Este domain.

The interiors, elegantly furnished, include rooms with frescoed ceilings.

On the ground floor, in the hall, there are the symbols of the characters who were protagonists in the history of the castle, from the descendants of the Este house to the envoys of the Papal States.

In the surroundings of Mesola, there is the church of the nativity of Maria, built in Baroque style.
