Molara (Sardinia): what to see on the island

post-title

What to see on the island of Molara, useful information regarding the geographical position, the territory and the ways to access it.

Tourist information

The island of Molara is located in the north east of Sardinia, together with the island of Tavolara, the peninsula of Punta Coda Cavallo, Moralotto and other minor rocks of a protected marine park.

The island of granite nature is covered by the typical Mediterranean scrub and reaches the highest point with 158 m. s.l.m. of Punta la Guardia.

In the eastern part, the island of Molara has an impervious territory with high and rocky coasts, Punta di Levante and Punta di Scirocco, while in the western part there are inlets with small easily accessible beaches, including Cala Spagnola and Cala Chiesa.

Molara is a private island where access to the coasts is allowed but, to visit the interior, it is good to get permission from the caretaker's home.

What see

Near Cala Chiesa there are the remains of a single-nave Romanesque church dedicated to the martyr Pope Ponziano, sent into exile on this island in the 3rd century AD.

Near the church the ruins of other structures emerge, including those relating to a monastery of nuns, whose existence is testified in the fifteenth century, but already in the following century the building was reduced to the state of ruin, due to frequent pirate raids .

On the top of the island, in a strategic position, there is a small fortified complex.
