Morano Calabro (Calabria): what to see

post-title

What to see in Morano Calabro, itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including San Bernardino Church, Maddalena Church and Norman Castle.

Tourist information

Located in the province of Cosenza, which is 82 km away, Morano Calabro is the base for pleasant excursions, thanks to its panoramic position on the steep sides of a hill lapped by the river Coscile, at the foot of the Pollino massif.

The Church of San Bernardino, built between 1452 and 1485 in Gothic style, together with the adjacent convent with cloister, is preceded by a portico where traces of frescoes are visible and on which two portals open.

In the single nave interior there is an interesting wooden ceiling, while in the monastery there is a museum dedicated to agriculture and pastoralism.

What see

The Chiesa della Maddalena, a grandiose Baroque church with a neoclassical facade, shows a remarkable dome and a spire bell tower, both covered with polychrome majolica.

Inside there are remarkable works of art, including some paintings painted between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, as well as a sculpture by Gagini made in 1505 and depicting the Madonna of the angels.

Also worth seeing are the Church of San Nicola, with a Gothic portal and crypt, and the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, where various works of art are preserved.

At a short distance, in an elevated position with respect to the town, there are the remains of the Norman-Swabian Castle, consisting of portions of the walls and cylindrical towers.
