Tourist information

Characteristic town of Portugal in Portuguese Extremadura, Nazaré develops into two unequivocally identifiable urban structures.

Originally a fishing village, today it has become a popular holiday resort thanks to its privileged position overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

According to a popular legend, in the fourth century AD the statue of the Madonna, mother of Jesus of Nazareth was donated to the town and the present name derived from this.

What see

El sitio, the original nucleus of the city, is located on top of a cliff, at an altitude of 110 meters above sea level, in a dominant position over the whole bay below.

Besides the famous Sanctuary, destination of religious pilgrimages, in this part of the city there is the small Church of the Sitio, where the wooden statue of the Virgin made in Nazaré, the region where Mary Mother of Jesus was born, is kept.

El Sitio is connected to Nazaré beach via a convenient funicular.

The seaside resort is located within a vast bay, located between two headlands and with a sandy beach.

In Nazarè there are several hotels, as well as numerous guest houses, a daily fish market and the Ethnographic Museum of Dr. Joaquim Manso, where interesting collections of utensils used by fishermen are exhibited.
