November 23: saint of the day, name day

post-title

The Saint of the day 23 November is San Clemente I Papa, which name day is celebrated and other saints who are celebrated on this date.

St. Clement I Pope

In order not to create confusion with Alexandrinus, Clement I is commonly known as Clement of Rome.

The list of the first four successors of San Pietro is placed in a different order from historians.

In fact, some place Clement I before Cletus while others cannot distinguish Cletus from Anacletus.

The Pontifical Yearbook, which was printed in Rome in 1871, places San Clemente I in fourth position, after San Lino and San Cleto, for which Clemente I would be the third successor of San Pietro.

Quinto Settimio Fiorente Tertulliano wrote that, around 199, the Church of Rome believed that Clemente had been ordained by Pietro, while San Girolamo said that in his day many were convinced that Clemente was the immediate successor of the Apostle Pietro.

The pontificate of Clement I lasted about 10 years, from 90 to 100, at the time of the emperors Domitian, Nerva and Trajan.

Pope Clement I always occupied an important place in the life of the Church, which also venerates him today as one of the apostolic fathers for the letter written to the community of Corinth.

The context from which the letter originates is linked to a dispute in the church of Corinth that led to the expulsion of several priests.

Nothing is known about the causes that caused the discontent, which degenerated into a revolt of the younger members of the community against the elderly.

No moral offense was accepted by the priests and their resignation was seen by Clemente as despotic and unjustifiable.

In the history of Christianity it represents in this case the first intervention by the bishop of Rome in matters relating to other ecclesial communities.

After making a premise about the good past conduct of the Corinthian Church, Clemente made a speech in which he denounced vices and virtues, illustrating his various topics with abundant illustrations taken from the biblical texts of the Old Testament.

With this he paved the way for his late reprimand for the unrest of that time, which he kept waiting for two thirds of his epistle to be completed.

Clement went on too long in his letter, which reached twice the length of the Letter to the Hebrews.

Numerous of his general exhortations were indirectly connected with the practical topic to which the letter was directed, for this reason it is believed that it was written based largely on the homilies with which he used to praise his Christian followers in Rome.

The letter, later called Clemente's first, affirmed, among other things, the authority of the bishops over the faithful and the primacy of the Apostolic See of Rome over the others.

Clemente expressed himself with a wise and paternal gravity, aware of his responsibilities and at the same time indulgent in his loving reproaches.

Little is known of the last years of Pope Clement I.

According to a tradition dating back to the fourth century, it seems that he died drowned in Crimea, the place of his exile, with an anchor tied to his neck.

On the contrary, the historian Eusebius of Caesarea and San Girolamo agree that Clement I died in 101, without making any mention of exile and martyrdom.
