San Bellino da Padova

Bellino da Padova was first archpriest of the Cathedral and was subsequently elected bishop of Padua in 1128.

Distinguishing himself for his holiness and for his organizational skills, he employed many of his energies to carry out a great spiritual reform of the diocese.

He was a promoter of charity among priests, tried to improve the organization in the parishes and favored the emancipation of serfs, collaborating for the affirmation of freedom.

When he was traveling to Vangadizza in 1147, he was assassinated by hired assassins near Fratta Polesine.

His body, initially buried in San Giacomo di Lugarano, in the province of Rovigo, was later transferred to San Martino di Variano which, in his honor, took the name of San Bellino.

The relics of the Saint are currently contained within a marble urn, placed behind the main altar of the parish church.

The cult of San Bellino is widespread especially in the dioceses of Padua and Adria-Rovigo.
