October 14: saint of the day, name day

post-title

The Saint of the day 14 October is San Callisto Papa, which name day is celebrated and other saints who are celebrated on this date.

St. Callixtus Pope

The history of this saint, Pope at the beginning of the third century, was very strange, considering that he had many opponents among the dissident Christians of Rome.

Of what his life was before becoming Pope, not much is known and the few news that we have come from the writings of Saint Hippolytus.

According to these documents, to be considered only partially reliable, it seems that before being elected Pope the Saint had been a slave and a cheater with an overly naive master.

Forced to flee to Portugal, he was arrested and brought back to Rome, where he was sentenced to forced labor in the mines of Sardinia.

Back in Rome, on the occasion of an amnesty, he was sent to Anzio.

Hence he was recalled by Pope Zeffirino, who entrusted him with the care of the Church cemeteries.

It was then that Callisto began the excavation of the great burial ground along the Appian Way which today bears his name.

After the death of Zeffirino, Callisto, his deacon, was elected pope himself.

It was just then, as the Supreme Pontiff, that the recriminations of certain Christians too loyal to traditions, too rigid in morals and little inclined to novelties, were attracted.

The new Pope was accused of heresy when he formulated the Mystery of the Trinity according to the Orthodox tradition, which was instead later confirmed by the Councils.

He was blamed for little zeal when, in times of relaxation, he instituted the fast of the Quattro Tempora.

But, above all, he was being challenged for the lack of disciplinary severity or, as it would be more appropriate to say, the mercy that, according to the teachings of Jesus, led him to welcome repentant sinners and those Christians who in time of danger had defended their faith weakly.

His death was heroic and it was the death of a martyr in 222.

Thrown into a well in Trastevere, probably during a popular uprising, his body was placed on the other side of the river, along Via Aurelia and away from the catacombs that he had built.
