San Placido

Born in Messina in 515 and died on October 5, 541, Placido was a Benedictine monk who suffered martyrdom in Messina on October 5, 541, is revered as a saint in Catholic and Orthodox religions.

Of noble origin, he was the first of four brothers and was introduced very young, together with his brother Mauro, to the monastery of Subiaco where Benedetto da Norcia had undertaken his work dedicated to serving God.

According to tradition, Placido, after being ordained abbot, was sent to Messina with the task of founding the first Benedictine monastery in the Sicily region.

On 5 October 541 he was martyred together with his sister Flavia, the brothers Eutichio and Vittorino and about thirty fellow friars, who lived with him in the monastery of San Giovanni, located near the mouth of the Boccetta stream.

The cult of San Placido and Martyr Companions grew from 4 August 1588, when his relics were found in Messina, during the restoration work carried out by the Order of Malta and concerning the Church of San Giovanni di Malta, where it is still are preserved.

The deep devotion to the martyr, validated by a special Bull of Sixtus V, found support for centuries by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, the Senate of Messina and the Archconfraternity of San Placido.
