What to see in Osimo, itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including the Church of San Marco, the Town Hall, the Civic Tower, the Cathedral of San Leopardo and the Baptistery.


Tourist information

Located in the Marche in the province of Ancona, on a hill overlooking the Musone Valley, Osimo was the ancient Auximum, which was fought over by Cesare and Pompeo in the Civil War.

In the fifth century it constituted one of the centers belonging to the Byzantine Pentapoli, while in 774 it was donated by Charlemagne to the Church.


Over the remains of the Roman walls dating back to the third century BC, defensive walls built in 1200 were built.

The Church of San Marco has a remarkable Baroque interior where interesting works are preserved, including a fresco by Arcangelo di Cola da Camerino and a Madonna and Saints by Guercino, made in 1643.

The twelfth-century Church of San Nicolò, characterized by a fourteenth-century portal and a Baroque interior, includes a convent where there are frescoes from the fifteenth century.


What see

The Church of San Giuseppe da Copertino, built in the thirteenth century, was later remodeled.

The seventeenth-century Palazzo Comunale is located next to the Civic Tower of 1200, having an interesting Guelph battlements, while in the internal courtyard are preserved the twelve Roman statues made of marble, used as an ornament of the forum of the ancient Auximum.

The Cathedral of San Leopardo, dating back to the eighth century, was built on the site where the Capitolium was located, later it was redone in the Romanesque-Gothic style in the thirteenth century, with subsequent alterations.

The Baptistery, also known as the Church of San Giovanni, has a linear facade made of terracotta, dating back to the thirteenth century and modified in the seventeenth.

In the fifteenth century interior stands out a magnificent wooden ceiling, decorated with paintings made by Antonio Sarti in the seventeenth century.
