Passo della Porticciola (Tuscany): path from Renaio

post-title

Tale of an excursion to the Porticciola pass departing from Renaio, passing by Rifugio Santi and continuing on the path with total travel times.

Pathway

Our trekking excursion to Passo della Porticciola begins in Renaio, a fraction of the municipality of Barga in the province of Lucca, located at 1013 meters above sea level.

Here we park the car and walk along the road towards Vetricia, where the Santi Refuge is located at 1300 meters above sea level.

It's a beautiful day in early October, on the spot there are many mushroom hunters who go down to Renaio with their car, let's try to understand from the expression of their faces if the harvest was satisfactory, but from what we could see later there were very few mushrooms, given the hot and dry weather of the last days of September which did not favor their growth.

At the refuge we make sandwiches and start the climb by taking the steep path Cai N. 20 which leads to Passo Porticciola (1700 meters above sea level) through a beautiful beech forest.

Once out of the woods the landscape opens and continuing on the path for a grassy and then stony stretch you reach the Porticciola Pass with a slight descent, where the wind blows strongly and the breathtaking panorama makes our view range to the sea with good visibility opaque only by a slight haze.

The journey time from Renaio is two hours on the outward journey and an hour and a half on the return journey.

To continue the excursion, from Porticciola you can choose various itineraries, you can get to the nearby Cima dell’Omo, also known as Alpe di Barga, reach the top of Monte Giovo, or descend towards the Holy Lake.
