Peiting (Germany): what to see

post-title

What to see in Peiting, a town in Upper Bavaria located along the Via Romantica, an itinerary including the Church of San Michele and the Sanctuary of Maria Egg.

Tourist information

Peiting is already mentioned in a document dated 1055, when Count Guelfo IV had the castle built on Mount SchloBberg, which later became the permanent seat of the German Guelphs and residence of the Peiting county.

When the family of the Peiting Counts died out, it passed to the Hohenstaufen, in 1269 to the Wittelsbacher and then to Bavaria, however remaining independent until 1343.

Only the Church of San Michele preserves traces of the glorious past of the country.

Here the lower parts of the bell tower and the columns of the altar base still come from the first stone church of 1055, the stone of the baptismal font bears the date 1331.

The remainder of the building was built in the 18th century in a rather unadorned form.

The three rococo altars that were purchased by the convent church of Rottenbuch dissolved in 1803 and partially integrated with carved statues, in addition to the confessionals and the pulpit, deserve attention.

To place the main altar, which dominates the entire interior of the church, it was necessary to raise the vault of the choir.

The altar and side statues of 1758 are the work of Franz Xaver Schmadi, while the monumental crypt, previously an ossuary, was built before 1350.

What see

At a distance of just 700 meters from the center is the 1700 Maria Egg Sanctuary, which boasts a fairly rich interior.

Peiting is also renowned for the enchanting landscape from which it is surrounded and for the recreational possibilities it offers, thanks to the countless naturalistic itineraries that lead to marsh ponds and to the pleasant day trips that can be made in the surroundings.
