Tips for photographing a sunset

Although being among the most appreciated and photographed subjects, the sunset is not an easy scenario to photograph.

Who observes the beauty of this extraordinary natural spectacle, above all appreciates its accentuated contrast of light and color, a characteristic that is not easy to reproduce by taking a photograph.

The action of taking a photograph in this situation inevitably leads to a loss of readability of the details in the dark areas of the frame, since the exposure measurement is normally carried out on the illuminated areas, if the opposite happens, calibrating the exposure on the dark areas, there is an overexposure of the sky, with consequent color fading.

Among the precautions to be taken there is, first of all, that of exhibiting preferably giving priority to the lights, that is, pointing the exposure meter of our camera towards the sky and taking based on the data collected in this way, accepting that the shaded details remain practically at dark.

An alternative is to measure the light with a spot reading, i.e. measuring the light in an illuminated point of the sky but without understanding the sun, thus seeking an intermediate reading that allows you to obtain a more uniform overall result in detail.

Special filters to be applied to the lens can help to obtain a sunset with a more accentuated shade of red.

As a final recommendation, it is appropriate to pay attention to the composition of the frame, avoiding that too dark areas prevail over the others.
