Photography: basics, history from analogue to digital

post-title

Basic notions on digital photography, history of the technique used from its origins to modern cameras, with the transition from analog to digital.

Meaning photography

If we want to explain in a few words the meaning of the term photography we can say that it is a technique that uses light to create images reproducing a real view.

The term photography derives from the Greek as a union of the two words "phos and graphis" which translated means "to write with light".

Origins of photography

The invention of photography is attributed to Niepce who, in the early 1800s, began intense research to understand the ability of silver chloride to be sensitive to light, which soon led him to make the first photographic image.

However, it still took a few years before the image obtained was stabilized, which was initially subject to rapid deterioration.

Sensitive materials were perfected, making films with celluloid support, also the first photographic optics later called lenses were developed, which over the years have been increasingly perfected, becoming fundamental for the realization of photographs of good quality.

The great qualitative leap occurred from 1960 onwards, with the introduction of exposure meters inside cameras and, subsequently, of numerous automatisms, which in the 1980s made it possible to focus and automatically display.

From the beginning of the twenty-first century onwards, digital cameras have evolved exponentially, achieving in many cases superior results to the film, thanks also to the introduction of increasingly sophisticated electronic CCD sensors, often available also in budget cameras .

Computer photo retouching and photo printing

Today digital photography and computers are very connected due to the possibility of processing and editing the photos taken in subsequent stages through computer programs designed for photo retouching.

Digital photos can be printed with excellent results using good quality ink jet or laser color printers, and mounted, with a special program, to make spectacular movies, to be burned if desired in DVD video format to be able to see them on any TV.

Photographic light technique

By photography we mean the image obtained using that particular technique that using light allows to impress a photographic film or stimulate the sensor of a digital camera.

Electronic technologies

Digital photography allows, through electronic technologies that directly process data in digital format, to obtain photographic images by storing them on a special memory card.

It is also possible to transform into digital format a photograph obtained in an analogical way printed or on a slide using special scanners or digital cameras.

Determining factors

Several factors contribute to the quality of the final result of a digital photo, including the number of pixels, the internal conversion system of the camera, which must transform the raw or raw data into a photographic image to be stored in jpeg format, the quality of the objective, the type of sensor used, which can be cmos or ccd, determining the amplitude of the dynamic range achievable for the captured images.

Analogic photography

Analog photography is that obtained by means of cameras that use photographic film as the storage medium.
