Praia a Mare (Calabria): what to see

post-title

What to see in Praia a Mare, a renowned seaside resort on the Calabrian coast washed by the Tyrrhenian Sea located in the province of Cosenza, visiting the Sanctuary of the Madonna della grotta and a procession of mid-August.

Tourist information

Placed in a beautiful landscape characterized by cedar plantations, the coast of Praia a Mare has equipped beaches, as well as hotels and restaurants.

In front of the coast is the island of Dino, with its characteristic triangular shape, where an excursion to the caves deserves to be admired for the evocative play of light created within them by the sea and sunlight.

Absolutely not to be missed is a visit to the Madonna della Grotta Sanctuary, located inside a cave, which is accessed via a long staircase.

What see

Inside this cave, you can see the finds that archaeological research has brought to light over the years, including various objects and ceramics dating back to the Upper Paleolithic, Neolithic and Roman times.

The cult of the sea that the inhabitants have is linked to a tradition dating back to 1326, according to which the wooden statue of the Madonna would have arrived from the sea and deposited there by the captain of a vessel.

Every year for mid-August, in memory of this event, the Statue of the Madonna is carried in the evening in a procession on the sea, accompanied by a suggestive torchlight procession.
