Psalm 135: complete, commentary

CommentDating back to the time after exile, Psalm 135 uses extracts from other psalms while still maintaining its beauty. He addresses the pilgrims who are present inside the sanctuary and begins by inviting the praise of the Lord. It continues with an act of faith to unite hearts, affirming that the name of God will be eternally above all idols.

[1] Alleluia. Praise the name of the Lord, praise it, serve the Lord,

[2] you who are in the house of the Lord, in the halls of the house of our God.


[3] Praise the Lord: the Lord is good; sing hymns to his name, because he is lovable.

[4] The Lord chose Jacob, Israel as his possession.

[5] I know how great the Lord is, our God above all gods.


[6] All that the Lord wants, he does it in heaven and on earth, in the seas and in all the abysses.

[7] Makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth, produces lightning strikes from the rain, releases winds from its reserves.

[8] He smote the firstborn of Egypt, from men to cattle.


[9] He sent signs and wonders among you, Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his ministers.

[10] He struck numerous nations and killed powerful kings:
