Psalm 27: complete, commentary

CommentPsalm 27 begins with the words the Lord is my light, the source of life that gives the right eyes to see things, giving joy and knowledge. The psalmist considers God his salvation because he always assists him against enemies who would otherwise have the better of him, because they hate him so much that they would tear his flesh mercilessly. Together with the Lord there is no reason to be afraid, he would not fear any harm even if an entire army camped against him until he reached the battle.

Psalm 27 complete

[1] Of David. The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom will I be afraid of? The Lord is the defense of my life, whom will I be afraid of?

[2] When the wicked assail me to tear my flesh away, it is they, adversaries and enemies, who stumble and fall.

[3] If an army encamps against me, my heart is not afraid; if the battle flares up against me, even then I have faith.

[4] One thing I asked the Lord, this alone I seek: to live in the house of the Lord every day of my life, to taste the sweetness of the Lord and admire his sanctuary.

[5] He offers me a place of refuge on the day of misfortune. He hides me in the secret of his home, lifts me up on the cliff.

[6] And now I raise my head to the enemies around me; I will sacrifice exultation sacrifices in his home, hymns of joy I will sing to the Lord.

[7] Hear my voice, Lord. I cry: have mercy on me! Answer me.

[8] My heart has said of you: "Seek his face"; your face, Lord, I seek.

[9] Do not hide your face from me, do not anger your servant. You are my help, do not leave me, do not abandon me, God of my salvation.

[10] My father and mother abandoned me, but the Lord collected me.
