Psalm 47: complete, commentary

CommentPsalm 47 constitutes a joyful hymn to God king of the universe, inviting all peoples to applaud the Lord. Victory for the people of Israel comes after dramatic defeats with the conquest of the promised land and the removal of Jerusalem from the Jebusites, culminating in the procession that enters the city carrying the ark of the covenant while the people exult cheering God.

[1] To the choir master. Of Core's children. Psalm.

[2] Applaud, all peoples, acclaim God with voices of joy;


[3] because the Lord, the Most High, great king over all the earth is terrible.

[4] He has subjected peoples to us, he has put nations under our feet.

[5] Our inheritance has chosen for us, the pride of Jacob his favorite.


[6] God ascends between cheers, the Lord at the sound of a trumpet.

[7] Sing hymns to God, sing hymns; sing hymns to our king, sing hymns;

[8] because God is king of all the earth, sing hymns with art.

[9] God reigns over peoples, God sits on his holy throne.

[10] The heads of peoples have gathered with the people of the God of Abraham, because they are the powerful of the earth of God: he is the Most High.
