Psalm 59: complete, commentary

post-title

CommentPsalm 59 is the prayer of a righteous man who is in Jerusalem, in the city besieged by the troops of Antiochus V who, after the looting of the treasures of the temple, began a paganization process. The righteous of whom this psalm speaks defends the Law of God, despite the danger of death that constantly harasses him.

Psalm 59 complete

[1] To the choir master. On "Do not destroy". Di Davide. When Saul sent men to watch over the house and kill him.

[2] Free me from enemies, my God, protect me from attackers.

[3] Deliver me from those who do evil, save me from those who shed blood.

[4] Behold, they threaten my life, the mighty rush against me. Lord, there is no fault in me, there is no sin;

[5] without my fault they rush and lurk. Wake up, meet me and look.

[6] You, Lord, God of armies, God of Israel, rise up to punish all nations; have no mercy on the traitors.

[7] They come back in the evening and growl like dogs, they wander around the city.

[8] Behold, they throw up insults, their lips are swords. They say: "Who listens to us?".

[9] But you, Lord, laugh at them, make fun of all people.

[10] I turn to you, my strength: it is you, O God, my defense.

[11] The grace of my God comes to my aid, God will make me challenge my enemies.

[12] Do not kill them, so that my people will not forget, disperse them with your power and bring them down, Lord, our shield.

[13] Sin is the word of their lips, they fall into the snare of their pride for the blasphemies and the lies they utter.

[14] Annihilate them in your anger, annihilate them and no more; and know that God dominates in Jacob, to the ends of the earth.

[15] They come back in the evening and growl like dogs, they go around the city

[16] wandering in search of food; bark, if they cannot be satisfied.

[17] But I will sing your power, in the morning I will exalt your grace because you have been my defense, my refuge in the day of danger.

[18] O my strength, I want to sing to you, for you are, O God, my defense, you, O my God, you are my mercy.
