Ragusa (Sicily): what to see in 1 day

post-title

What to see in Ragusa, one-day itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including the Cathedral of San Giorgio and the Church of San Giuseppe.

Tourist information

The city is made up of two nuclei, modern Ragusa and Ragusa Ibla, which is the oldest part, that is, where the oldest and most noteworthy buildings are located.

Starting in 1926, the two sides came together, giving rise to a single city that became the provincial capital from the following year.

Ragusa Ibla certainly does not lack visible evidence of the past, including the Cathedral of San Giorgio, with its imposing architecture, and the Church of San Giuseppe, respectively from the eighteenth and sixteenth centuries, both the result of the project by Rosario Gagliardi, characterized by a beautiful baroque facade crowned at the top by the bell tower.

What see

In the new part of the city it is possible to visit the Baroque Cathedral and the Archaeological Museum, which collects interesting ancient material found in and around Ragusa, including the remains of houses, as well as the reconstruction of a pottery factory including oven, pottery clay and tools used to forge artistic objects.

Currently Ragusa is above all an industrial city, thanks to important asphalt mines, located two kilometers from the city center, and plants suitable for the production of hydraulic lime and cement.

In 1950, some drilling carried out underground in the area surrounding the city led to the discovery of oil fields, an event that involved the construction of an oil pipeline for the transport of crude oil to the Augusta refinery.
