Roccacasale (Abruzzo): what to see

post-title

What to see in Roccacasale, a village in the Peligna Valley located on the slopes of Monte Rocca, an itinerary including Castello De Sanctis, Baronial Palace, Church of San Michele Arcangelo and city entrance doors.

Tourist information

The ancient village, or the highest part of the country, has internal roads developed radially, some with the appearance of ramps, others with that of steps alternating with flat transversal passages.

Among the main monuments to be seen is the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, whose consecration dates back to 1579, but the origin is much older.

The Castle of Roccacasale, which was owned by the De Sanctis barons, has a triangular shape and includes a tower.

Inside, stone elements stand out, probably recycled material from other pre-existing buildings defending the town.

What see

The Baronial Palace, of which only a few rooms remain today, was erected near the church in a later period than the castle.

As for the four access gates to the citadel, some argue that two of these, respectively the "under the church" door, located in via San Michele, and the "Gerone" door, were the two city entrances.

The other two doors, which instead opened onto the valley, were called a "Porta Mazzamorello", with square jambs without architrave, the other "Porta della Valle", as it gave access to the numerous agricultural fields located along the slopes of the hill. .

For those who love walking, a path that starts from the village allows you to reach Colle delle Fate, located at 724 meters above sea level, in about forty minutes, where you can observe some wall sections that belonged to an ancient settlement dating back to Roman times.
