Rothenburg (Germany): what to see in the medieval village

post-title

What to see in Rothenburg, one day itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest in the medieval village of Bavaria, including the historic center surrounded by walls.

Tourist information

A beautiful town in Bavaria, a region of Germany, Rothenburg is located on a hill overlooking the Tauber river, along the suggestive Romantic Road.

The history of the city begins in the tenth century, with the construction of a fortress on top of the hill and, in about 1070, of a Castle of the Comburg-Rothenburg Counts.

In 1116 the Comburg-Rothenburg lineage died out and part of the hill became the property of Corrado III of Swabia, who built the castle around which the town was built, which in 1274 became an imperial city, developing considerably in the fourteenth century. .

In the sixteenth century Rothenburg participated in the war of the peasants and the league of Smalcalda and, until the war of the thirty years, during which it suffered various damages, the city prospered.

In 1803 Rothenburg lost its autonomy with the passage to Bavaria.

What see

The city has maintained its typical medieval aspect, with the historic center located on the top of the hill and recited by walls, which can be traveled on foot along the patrol path.

A set of towers and doors surrounds the picturesque center, where everything has remained as in the times of the greatest splendor of Rothenburg, especially in winter, with the snow, the whole acquires a fairytale appearance, especially in the period before the holidays Christmas, when the famous Christmas Market takes place, which attracts tourists from all over, who also find here a typical shop specializing in Christmas decorations, the "Christmas Village" of Käthe Wohlfahrt, which remains open all year round.

In the Burggarten, the garden located on the rocky outcrop overlooking the Tauber river, there is a chapel, the only remnant of the thirteenth century imperial fortress, from which it is possible to enjoy a spectacular view of the river.

Inside the city are the Plonlein, a picturesque meeting of streets between half-timbered houses and a fountain, the central square, Marktplatz, on which stands its most beautiful building or the Rathaus, the church of San Giacomo, a mighty Gothic-style building.
