Located in Campania in the province of Salerno, on the slopes of the Maddalena mountains and on the eastern side of the Vallo di Diano, Sala Consilina has a historic center founded by the Lombards in the place where an ancient necropolis once stood.

It was the Normans, around the year 1000, who built a castle for defensive purposes.


In the eighteenth century Sala Consilina reached its maximum splendor, in that period numerous noble buildings, churches and chapels were erected.

Among the buildings of major importance is the Palazzo Grammatico, dating back to 1722, with a beautiful rusticated portal and decorated with shelves with windows and balconies.

What see

The Paleochristian Baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte deserves to be visited, characterized by an interior containing a source whose waters are channeled into a baptismal font.


This building, whose foundation dates back to the fourth century, contains some paintings depicting the four evangelists.

The church of Santo Stefano dating back to 1100, has a single nave interior, equipped with four chapels on each side, where two valuable tables are preserved, one having as subject the Madonna della Consolazione with Saints Agostino, Stefano, Maria Maddalena and Monica the other depicting Maria delle Grazie between Sant'Onofrio and San Carlo Borromeo, works by the painter Giovanni Di Gregorio.

In the Antiquarium Museum it is possible to see the finds of the ancient necropolis.
