Tourist information

Santo Domingo, located at the mouth of the Rio Ozama, was originally called La Nueva Isabela, Santo Domingo del Puerto de la Isla de la Espanola and was founded in 1498 by Bartolomeo Colombo brother of Christopher.

The urban structure of the oldest city founded by Europeans in the New World served as a model for the new colonial cities.

In fact, the first colonial cultural social institutions were born here and the oldest colonial buildings in America were built, including the Cathedral of Santa Maria, the first Christian cathedral, the Dominican Convent, the first university, the Hospital San Nicolas de Bari, the first hospital , and other historic buildings that have allowed this city to be declared by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site and to be decorated by the UN with the title of "Cuna de America", which translated into Italian means "Cradle of America" .
