Nicola, born in Sant'Angelo in Pontano in 1245 and died in Tolentino on 10 September 1305, entered the convent of the Eremitani Friars of Sant'Agostino near Tolentino, as a young friar who recently became a priest, but already made himself known as a great man of Christian faith, endowed with great piety and practicing hard penances and very intense prayer, as well as a great availability put at the service of souls.

The canonization process began a few years after his death, his grave was decorated with a collection of paintings that testify to his life and the great cult towards him, connected to the hope of a future life after death, from the moment that he was also considered the patron of the souls of Purgatory.

Following an attempt to steal the arms, which had been amputated to take them away, an extraordinary event occurred that made the devotion to St. Nicholas increase even more, in fact fluid blood began to flow which made the company fail due to the great fright caused to thieves.

The devotion of St. Nicholas has always had a strong link with the sign of the blessed sandwiches, of which he had nourished on the indication of the Madonna, experimenting its effectiveness with the personal healing of a deadly disease.

St. Nicholas of Tolentino is the patron saint of the souls of Purgatory and of the universal Church with regard to problems concerning ecumenism.
