San Pio of Pietrelcina

Padre Pio, born Francesco Forgione, was born in Pietrelcina, in the province of Benevento, on May 25, 1887.

He was the son of poor peasants, very devoted to God and to the cult of the Madonna.

From an early age he had apparitions of Jesus and the Madonna but, having convinced himself that they were only manifestations common to all Christians, he never spoke of them to anyone for many years.

He entered the Capuchin monastery at the age of sixteen, it was January 22, 1903, taking the name of Fra 'Pio da Pietrelcina and becoming a priest on August 10, 1910.

His priesthood, from the beginning, was conditioned by serious health problems, which exempted him from completing military service.

Following his military leave, Fra Pio was sent to the convent of San Giovannni Rotondo, in the province of Foggia, where the beneficial effects of the climate on his sick physique convinced him to ask his superiors to be able to stay in that healthy place.

It is in San Giovanni Rotondo that Padre Pio begins his mission as a thaumaturge and apostle of the confessional.

Men and women, coming from the neighboring towns of the Gargano and from other parts of Italy, begin to arrive at his confessional, driven by the growing fame of the friar due to the exceptional healing abilities and miracles performed.

He received the stigmata twice, the first in 1910, shortly after the start of his priesthood, the second in September 1918, which did not close for over 50 years.

For many years he was heavily accused by doctors and the Vatican of the truthfulness of the stigmata and miracles that had been attributed to him.

Even the Vatican, after making several investigations, decided to suspend it from the priestly ministry, it was May 31, 1923, inviting the faithful not to go on pilgrimage to San Giovanni Rotondo again.

The beatification process began in 1969 but the oppositions were innumerable, to the point that the beatification was only completed on May 2, 1999.

Padre Pio was declared a saint on June 16, 2002 under the pontificate of John Paul II.
