San Gregorio magno
Born in Rome around 540, San Gregorio Magno entered the political career as an adult, reaching the position of prefect of Rome.
Upon entering the convent, he was ordained a deacon, later he held the office of papal legate in Constantinople.
On 3 September 590 he was elevated to the chair of Peter becoming Pope, proving himself a true pastor in the disengagement of his high office as well as in the devoted care of the poor.
He was very zealous in his work of propagating the faith and wrote many treatises on moral and theological arguments.
Gregory had the merit of thoroughly reorganizing the Roman liturgy, putting the previous sources in order and dedicating himself to the composition of new texts.
The correspondence and homilies to the people abundantly testify to its varied activity, demonstrating a great familiarity with the sacred texts.
He promoted a new way of singing, considered exquisitely liturgical which, taking his name from him, was identified with the term Gregorian and was adopted by the Catholic Church to accompany the ritual celebrations.
Pope Gregory I died on March 12, 604, after years of suffering caused by gout, his remains are located in the Basilica of San Pietro.
