Blessed Teresa of Calcutta
Mother Teresa of Calcutta, born in Skopje in Albania on August 26, 1910 and died in Calcutta on September 5, 1997, was a Catholic religious and founder in Calcutta in India, in 1950, of the religious congregation of the Missionaries of Charity, whose mission was to take care of the weakest victims of poverty and all those who are turned away from everyone and considered a burden for society.
Her tireless work done among the poor of Calcutta made her one of the best known and loved people in the world.
She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and was proclaimed Blessed on 19 October 2003 under the pontificate of Pope John Paul II.
In the late eighties, her health conditions worsened further, with the progress of rheumatoid arthritis, from which she had been suffering for some time, which brought her to hospital in 1983 and with the heart attack, immediately in 1989, which made her Pacemaker application required.
Resigned as mother superior of the Order, she was subsequently re-elected unanimously, accepting the result and remaining at the head of the congregation.
In 1991 he had pneumonia, in 1992 further heart problems survived and in 1993 he contracted malaria.
And to make matters worse, in April 1996 Mother Teresa fell badly breaking her collarbone.
After all these vicissitudes, on March 13, 1997 he definitively abandoned the leadership of the Missionaries of charity and in the same month he met Pope John Paul II for the last time.
He died in Calcutta on the following 5 September, reaching the age of 87.
