San Pietro Claver
Pietro Claver, born in Verdú on June 25, 1581 and died in Cartagena de Indias on September 8, 1654, was a priest of the Society of Jesus and an Italian missionary.
Belonging to a family of peasant origins, from an early age he was attracted to consecrated life, which is why he completed his studies in various colleges run by the Jesuits.
The meeting with Sant’Alfonso Rodriguez made him discover his missionary vocation.
Alfonso Rodriguez had served as a goalkeeper at the college of Montesion in Palma de Mallorca, previously he had been a wealthy married merchant.
When he lost his wife, children and all his possessions, he decided to enter the Company of Jesus at the age of forty.
He was highly esteemed by all for his innate wisdom and holiness.
When Pietro Claver met him, he immediately entered into a deep spiritual friendship with him, the elderly priest understood the qualities hidden in his heart and worked to transmit that extra dose of energy that was missing to his young friend.
So it was that in 1610 Pietro left and landed in Cartagena, where he remained for 44 years, being a missionary among African American slaves at a time when the slave trade was in full swing.
During his lifetime he baptized and educated more than three hundred thousand inhabitants of the lands where he was on a mission.
He died on September 8, 1654.Recommended readings
